GAUTENG, SOUTH AFRICA – Since Team TOKEN was founded just over two years ago, it has gone from strength to strength. Its main goal is nevertheless not medals and podium wins – although the team fares pretty well in this department – but to raise funds for a children’s charity called Chances of Hope. To date, the team has helped generate about R350 000 for this NPO, and now it’s gearing up for an exciting new fundraiser – an online lucky draw with a family safari holiday as the main prize.
Team TOKEN is so much more than a sports team. Started by Misha Loots and Marinus Schoeman at the end of 2016, the idea was to create a community of like-minded people who could not only enjoy racing but also give back to society. And the team certainly ticks those two boxes!
In 2018 Team TOKEN achieved the third-best provincial results and fourth-best national results, while also racking up 14 podium wins and 31 top-10 placements in various categories. Misha, also the team manager, says they are aiming to build on this momentum and have already kicked off 2019 on a high note by adding a women’s team to the Team TOKEN family.
Sticking to its core values, Team TOKEN chose from the get-go to give 50% of all its earnings to the Chances of Hope charity. They say charity begins at home, but in this case it began in the heart of the Karoo. While competing in a cycle tour through the Northern Cape, Marius Koorts was so touched by the poverty in small rural towns that he ‘felt the need to make a difference’. He started Chances of Hope in 2005 in order to reach out to rural areas, specifically in the Northern Cape and Karoo, and with one vision: ‘a world in which every person has a chance of hope.’ The charity’s main goals for 2019 include a drive to fund 8 000 blankets for four communities, as well as a drive to improve the sustainability of the soup kitchens Chances of Hope assists.
Now you too can get involved with raising funds for Team TOKEN and Chances of Hope – no cycling required! Team TOKEN plans on hosting a big prize draw for which tickets will be sold online from 24 May – 2 June 2019 at R150 per ticket. The winner, who will be chosen on the 3rd of June and announced on Facebook, will walk away with a bushveld break. The prize is valued at R15 000 and consists of a two-night stay for a family of four at the Entabeni Safari Conservancy’s Wildside Safari Camp, all meals included and two game drives.
Whether you are a keen cyclist yourself, want to give back to the community or are simply in need of a family break, there’s no reason not to support this wonderful initiative.
And what would a cycling-driven fundraiser be without a little competition – we challenge businesses, big and small, to challenge each other in making the biggest difference in hundreds of children’s lives. Starting today, post a photo of your team on social media using the hashtag #teamtoken4hope and nominate at least two other companies to do the same. Let’s see who can buy the most tickets – remember, the more tickets you buy, the better your chances of winning!
